In Chinese metaphysics, everyone has a connection to one of the Five Elements (Wu Xing) — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water. One of the simplest traditional methods links your element to the last digit of your birth year. Here's how to find yours.
Find your element by birth year
Look at the last digit of the year you were born:
- 4 or 5 → Wood (e.g. 1984, 1985, 1994, 1995)
- 6 or 7 → Fire (e.g. 1986, 1987, 1996, 1997)
- 8 or 9 → Earth (e.g. 1988, 1989, 1998, 1999)
- 0 or 1 → Metal (e.g. 1990, 1991, 2000, 2001)
- 2 or 3 → Water (e.g. 1992, 1993, 2002, 2003)
Tip: the Chinese lunar new year usually falls in late January or February. If you were born in January or early February, you may belong to the previous year — check the exact lunar date to be sure.

Wear your element — or balance it
Some people wear their birth element to amplify their natural strengths; others choose a different element to bring in a quality they want more of. Both are valid — in Wu Xing, it's about balance.
